Irit Zohar’s painting is inspired by a world of feeling and passion. Her works are created through spontaneous perceptual connections with the profound, achieved through her ability to delve into the internal realms of the sub-conscious, and are finally enriched with the personal experiences of her current existence.

The suitable wording that depicts Irit’s world of art:
“The painting is a mosaic of testimony relaying an entire experience.”
The style of her work is defined as “Action Painting”, which has undergone a feminine gender shift. The technique involves stormy painting by means of rolling and spattering of color, covering almost the entire fabric. “Action Painting” is a painting practice which has a source identifiable with male power. Through her present context Irit is now conducting a dialogue with the post-feminist trends of our time.
The element of “Action Painting” in Irit`s work requires her to totally give up her medium of sight, not allowing for either a reflective or probing look until after the creation is completed. It is not possible to plan or know the result beforehand. This brings out the effervescence of the soul at an elated level, neutralizing even the shrewdest realist’s rationality.

The process through which Irit creates her art is a euphoric one, in which she utilizes all of her senses: She smears the paint onto the fabric with free hand movement. She kneads the acrylic colors with her hands onto the fabric with momentum – into layers, patches and flowing lines. Her arms also take part in this process and she can never foretell in what direction her work will develop. Irit works without paintbrushes, but rather applies the paint directly onto the fabric. “The feeling of the paint in my hand is sensual and arouses my creativity process”, she claims. During the creation process she drums on the fabric and incorporates scratching and engraving with her nails. The energy and feelings that she puts into the work from the moment she enters the studio, translates into a rhythm on the fabric, and along with the palette of colors, they create the atmosphere for the painting and for the motion to surge into the creation of the piece. Her work is creative, rich, stirring, and sensual, flowing from deep within, and is an expression of her disposition.

Irit sometimes integrates text, as a sort of graffiti, at the beginning of the process of her creation. She fades the text out over time during the progression of her work until it is finally hidden from view. In this fashion the events are then interpreted into the work, invisible to the viewer who remains enigmatic. Irit’s paintings are a sort of personal diary, a tapestry of feeling, including elements of spiritual residue, all of which come together in her depiction of meaningful moments from throughout her lifetime. These moments are caught in large size pieces, and are expressed through the full spectrum of colors; starting with the cold colors where the blues and purples are dominant, colors that depict mourning, anger and yearning, to the warm colors being the reds and yellows, depicting warmth and security. In some of the abstract pictures, concealed figurative impressions in addition to words and letters may appear. The “X’s” reappear as images in many of Irit’s works as an impression of removal and separation, and it could be that their function is either to connect between the various parts or to hide and tame the gushing flow of heavy emotions.

The message within her work can be seen both within the framework of which she creates the art work and also in the way she leads her life. This is a message of having no restraints, having no fear, having the courage to delve into the depths of internal realms where one lacks control, and full empowered self expression.

The freedom and power in all of the aspects of Irit’s art is influenced heavily by her deep and intense spiritual work, which has been a central factor in her life for many years. Irit has undertaken spiritual learning journeys in India, participated in seminars and workshops focusing on spirituality and connections to the inner self, and also conducts meditation sessions on a daily basis. This level of spirituality has attributed to Zohar’s way of courageously enabling self expression of the soul without any fears and limitation.
